36-Hole Trophy (Ron Thomas)

By common consent, this 36-hole stroke competition, preceded by an auction sweepstake, was re-introduced in 1976 and a superb trophy was presented by Ron Thomas. Now known as the “Ron Thomas Trophy,” this is played in early September which also used to be the date for many years for the Stephen Cup and the Club Championship.

Ron Thomas
It was the passing of the old and in with the new at Grimsby as the clubs junior players dominated the prestigious Ron Thomas Trophy filling the first four places.

The course proved to be a demanding test with fast greens, difficult pin positions and thick rough to contend with.

This proved no problem to 13 year old Matthew Coutts however who won his first senior competition at the club with net rounds of 74 & 65 for a 139 total off his seventeen handicap.

This was a tremendous achievement for young Matthew who succeeds his father Paul as the trophy holder and in doing so becomes the youngest winner in the events history.

The excellent form of Dale Munson continued who fell one shot short in second place on a 140 total with rounds of net 67 & 73 despite his handicap being reduced to 5.7 during the previous week.

Jamie Kinnaird was in third place, his best ever senior finish with rounds of net 72 & 70 for a 142 total whilst Matthew Owen took fourth spot with rounds of net 71 & 72 for a 143 total.

Chairman's Cup 1925

The Chairman's Cup 1925
Until 1945 this was known as the “Knott Cup”
and one was presented each year by Chairman H. E. Knott. When he retired in 1945 and Malcolm Smith took the chair, he wisely decided to present a perpetual trophy known now as the Chairman’s Cup. Otherwise it has retained its character. Players go out in threes for stroke play on three specified Saturdays and the player with the lowest aggregate from two of the three rounds is the winner. It is off handicap.
Format: Full handicap Strokeplay.

The Chairmans Cup competition at Grimsby is a three round medal event played across consecutive weekends with the best two scores out of three deciding the winner.
The first round was held on Saturday 26th April,
in sunny but blustery conditions and with the course looking very green in the early season. Despite the 14th hole being played off a shortened tee due to ongoing flood damage repair work,
the rest of the course was playing long with a number of winter changes to bunkers and rough in evidence.
Winner of Round One was Bradley Lord with a net 66 round followed by fellow junior Josh Trunkfield who posted a net 67. Still very much in contention are Stuart Cullum who carded a net 68 to leave him in third with the 2006
Club Champion Alan Anderson placed in fourth after a net 69.
Leaderboard After Round One;
1. B.Lord 71-5-66
2. J.Trunkfield 72-5-67
3. S.Cullum 76-8-68
4. A.Anderson 72-3-69
5. J.Mawer 85-16-69
6. W.Ward 81-12-69

The Chairmans Cup 2nd Round at Grimsby produced good scoring in some easier conditions than had been experienced so far this Spring.
Winner of Round Two was Gary Hawkins with Richard Armitage in second, Bill Ward in third and Jim Wilkinson in fourth.
All the players remarkably carded net 66 rounds and had to be separated by card countbacks.
Round Two;
1. G.Hawkins 77-11-66
2. R.Armitage 69-3-66
3. W.Ward 77-11-66
4. J.Wilkinson 78-12-66

Club Championship (1925)

The Cup awarded for the Championship of the Club was presented by the ‘Proprietors of the Grimsby Evening Telegraph and Saturday Telegraph.’ Initially, the Championship was decided by match play following a qualifying round in which the best eight scores went forward into a draw.

Club Championships

Possibly because of the War there was no Championship played in 1940, and when it was resumed the following year this may have been the time when it was altered to stroke play. Entry is now limited to 84 contestants.

J. W. Ellmore won the Championship on nine occasions, but that feat was surpassed by M. G. Lee who won his tenth title in 1979. For a number of years it has been played concurrently with the Stephen Cup.

Club Champion 2007

The Grimsby Golf Club Gents Championship was held on Saturday 1st September 2007. The event attracted a maximum field of 81 players who played over 36 holes and started of both tees on the course at 8am. The conditions for the event which had been postponed from earlier in the year due to the flooding were excellent and very favourable for playing good golf. The warm blustery wind however made club selection difficult. This coupled with the fact that the course had dried out considerably encouraged the ball the run a long distance and with very quick fast greens it was inevitable the conditions would catch a number of players out. At the end of the 36 holes the Club had a new Club Champion and one of the youngest anyone can remember.

Lawrence Warne, who is only 17 years of age, added this Championship to his recent successes. The day before he won the Grimsby Golf Club Saab Junior Open beating a field of over 50 golfers from various parts of the County. The week before he won the Les Johnson Lincolnshire under 21 Open Championship, which attracts all the very best younger golfers from throughout the County. This year this competition was also played at Grimsby Golf Club which probably gave Lawrence a slight edge, if he indeed needed it. Within eight days he had bagged three prestigious championships reducing his golfer handicap to 2.7. More good news for Lawrence during this eight day period was that he had been accepted onto the Dennis Pugh, Golf School of excellent in Sussex. He will continue with the education and at the same time receive some excellent golf tuition from one of the Country’s (if not the worlds) recognised teachers. Lawrence starts his new role shortly and he is looking forward to the challenge.

Lawrence (photograph P1010125 – showing him receive his trophy from Club Captain Mick Staples) returned a gross score for the two rounds of 146 which was 5 shots clear of the second place competitors, John Rhea and another up and coming junior Bradley Lord, who tied on 151 shots. (Photograph P1010127 shows Bradley on the left and John Rhea on the right receiving the Mike Lee silver salver which they will hold for 6 months each from Club Captain Mick Staples) John Rhea also won the best am net score when he knocked it round in 65.
The best p.m net score was shared between veteran (in comparison) Steve Dobbs and another Junior, Jamie Kinniard who both scored 65. The Stephen Cup which is the best net score over the 36 holes was tied when John Watson and Jamie Kinnaird both carded a 135. The rules state that in the event of a tie the match should be decided by a play off. This match is scheduled for later this week.
At the presentation the Club Captain took the opportunity to present past Captain and long standing member Andy Flinn with the Senior Championship which he won earlier in the year. (Photo P1010128 shows Andy receiving his trophy) Photograph P1010130 shows the new Club Champion Lawrence Warne with the Senior Champion Andy Flinn with their respective trophies after the presentation by Club Captain Mick Staples.

Hospital Cup 1929

Presented by T. W. Baskcomb, and inscribed “The Grimsby and District Hospital Golf Challenge Cup.” It was intended for play between the two local clubs in the following format: each club held a qualifying round to select three players who, with the Club Captain, formed a team of four. These two teams met, firstly at one and then at the other club, and engaged in stroke play, off handicap. The lowest aggregate team claimed the Cup.

Hospital Cup It was rather involved; Grimsby won in 1929 and again in 1930 when the team number was increased to six. This competition was abandoned at the outbreak of War when it was in the possession of Grimsby

In 1957 it was put forward as the cup for a new competition “Father and Sons” which is played as a foursomes bogey competition.

Joe Sprott Trophy 1963
The jovial founder of “Eskimo Foods,” and no mean golfer himself, presented this Silver Cigar Box as a perpetual trophy for an 18-hole match play competition off scratch. He agreed, in 1967, that the format should be altered to a 36-hole stroke play competition which carried the added interest of an auction sweep held the evening previous to the day’s play.

Joe Sprott Trophy This was an enormously popular event but in 1975, the directors, being aware of a certain R & A recommendation, sought Joe’s acceptance to its reverting to match play knockout for single handicap players. The runner-up in this competition wins the Ivan Coo Salver.

The Medal Trophy 1957

Medal
The Medal Trophy 1957
There was a forerunner, the “Victory Trophy”, which took the form of a hickory-shafted putter presented by “Banker” Custance to celebrate the happy conclusion of the Second World War. It was contested twice a year as a stroke play competition and then was integrated into the Spring and Autumn Medals. This relic was for many years over the fireplace in the old lounge. Initially, the winner had his name on a brass medal which was slotted along the shaft, but most of these were lost and in 1957 it was decided to offer a more tangible recognition for success. In 1981 those eligible to play in this competition were the Monthly Medal winners from each division during the current year.
